The ESD workbench characteristics
An ESD workbench typically consists of a number of different elements:
Static dissipative work surface: The working surface of an ESD workbench should have a resistance value between 1.0 x 10e9 Ω and 1.0 x 106 Ω . This is a requirement to prevent any static discharge that might damage the product. Additionally, it is necessary to avoid any safety issue caused by high voltages discharge.
Shelves : Electronic parts of the product and working tools might be placed in the shelves, thus, to avoid the accumulation of static charges, these need to be as well static dissipative. In fact, all elements of the ESD workbench should be static dissipative. Cupboards: The cupboards in ESD workbenches might be used to store working tools, thus, as for the shelves, these should have static dissipative surfaces. ESD wrist straps: Even though not an element of the ESD workbench, the ESD wrist strap is a necessary equipment of this working space. Every operator should wear an ESD wrist strap to ensure that no discharge occurs. Wiring: All static dissipative surfaces, wrist straps and metalwork should be connected to a common grounding point. It is important to place the wiring in a suitable manner considering electrical safety and discharge effectiveness.
